So, I’m reading Clay Shirky’s new book Cognitive Surplus, and I’m only on page 39, & already I’ve had to stop myself from throwing the book across the room three times.
Shirky’s stories are GREAT. Vivid, full of detail. But his conclusions, so far, seem based on a willful ignorance of history, from the way people found out about and opposed the Vietnam War, to the age of those involved in nearly every uprising from civil rights to the French Revolution. Shirky is too anxious to tell us that what’s going on has never happened before-which is actually a disservice to his ideas.
I’ll have more later.
